Mental Health Month Reminds Us We Are Not Alone
Each year, mental health groups across the country observe May as Mental Health Month, reminding everyone that mental health matters and by offering resources to assist in mental health journeys.
NAMI North Texas the beneficiary of this year’s Don’t Quit Half Marathon 5K, is making it their mission to remind everyone that you are not alone. In fact, 19.1% of U.S. adults experienced mental illness in 2018 (47.6 million people), which represents 1 in 5 adults. Additionally, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., which has increased by a staggering 31% since 2001. These numbers will sharply increase during the COVID-19 pandemic as many individuals are facing job losses, figuring out how to pay their monthly bills, fearing a health crisis, and feeling isolated from others.
With these statistics, it’s important for all of us to share our story, which is also a major focus of The Don’t Quit Foundation. “By sharing, it helps others who may be struggling, as well as helps you with positive support,” states Jen Anthony, The Don’t Quit Foundation Founder. “It can help you in your own recovery, and also promote understanding and empathy in the community.”
Sharing your story does not necessarily have to be vocal, either. Think outside-of-the-box. Be creative. There are many ways to communicate how we are feeling including…
- 1. Ask a friend to join you for a run or a walk, chat about what’s happening in your life
- 2. One-on-one chats with family and friends
- 3. Host a dinner party with a small, intimate group of friends
- 4. Journal or write a script
- 5. Paint, draw or sculpt
- 6. Take on photography
- 7. Create a video
- 8. Write a song
It does not really matter how you express yourself. Just remember to be authentic, use your own voice. Finally, as important it is to tell your story, it’s also important to listen. Avoid being judgmental and gossiping to others.
Together, by sharing and listening, we can make a difference in so many lives.
