Meet Don’t Quit Ambassador Carolyn Macduff

This year, we are thrilled to have Don’t Quit Ambassadors to help spread the messaging about our nonprofit and bring mental health awareness in the community. Meet Carolyn Macduff!

 

What is your name?

Carolyn Macduff

 

Tell us about yourself.

I just recently graduated with my Master’s degree in Speech Pathology. I love running, reading, traveling, and baking (I can make a mean brownie)! Fun fact about me: I’m a certified scuba diver and have dreams of going to Australia to dive the Great Barrier Reef!

 

Have you participated in the Don’t Quit Half Marathon & 5K before?

I’ve never participated, but I love this organization and the message behind it. And the excuse to run another half marathon? SIGN ME UP!

 

Why are you running in this year’s Don’t Quit Half Marathon & 5K?

I’ve always struggled with mental health. I was diagnosed with anxiety a little over a year ago, but have been battling this disorder all my life. Every day is a constant battle of my mind versus me, and it makes me happy to find an organization that supports me in my battle. Since running is my main passion and hobby, it only makes sense to participate and motivate others who are going through what I am. Taking care of my mental health is so, so important to me. If I can inspire someone out there to find joy in running and getting out of their mind as they run for a couple of hours, I’m more than doing my part for this wonderful community.

 

What does “Don’t Quit” mean to you?

Don’t Quit means choosing to continue and fight, even when it gets hard. It means choosing joy, positive thoughts, and that little voice that whispers “I know you’ve got this.” As someone who has prevented multiple suicides and have many friends who suffer from various mental illnesses, it’s important to never quit being a voice for them and checking in on them. Life gets hard, but quitting means you’re letting negativity and your mind win. 

 

Do you have any tips for someone who may be struggling with mental health issues?

Reach out if you’re struggling. I went to therapy and began talking about my mental health. And, you know what? Talking has inspired others in my life to be open. More people are suffering with mental health than you think, and talking about mental health normalizes it and allows people to feel more comfortable sharing their story. In 2020, life is so, so stressful. Society expects too much from people and some days, your brain and body just want to stop and give up. The more you reach out and tell people you’re struggling, the more people will want to be there for you and support you. People won’t know you’re struggling unless you tell them, Suffering alone sucks, let me tell you. A support system has been a lifesaver for me and makes those hard days just a little more bearable.
